COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Elmhurst volleyball team completed a 2-0 day at Colorado College's
Pikes Peak Challenge with a sweep of Cornell College (Iowa) 25-23, 25-19, 26-24.
The Bluejays (15-5) played well in the big moments to take first and third sets that were both tied in the latter stages.
In the first set, neither team led by more than three at any point, culminating in a 23-23 deadlock.
Alli Rogers recorded her third and fourth kills on consecutive points to give Elmhurst the set.
Hannah NimrickElmhurst hit .333 in the second set and dominated the beginning portions, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. Cornell rallied to take a 12-11 advantage and the set stayed tight until 16-16 when the Bluejays jumped into another gear, rattling off three straight points and ending the set on a 9-3 run. A
Hannah Nimrick kill and a Cornell ball handling error gave Elmhurst a two-set lead.
In the third set, Cornell jumped out to an early 7-3 advantage, which forced Elmhurst to play catch-up. The Bluejays slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually using three straight points to tie the set at 24-24. An attack error and a
Mary Lawrence ace sealed the match for Elmhurst.
Seven different Bluejays recorded kills with Nimrick, Alli Rodgers, and Lawrence leading the way with seven. Nimrick hit .429, while adding 25 assists and five digs.
Mel Lundin led the team in hitting percentage (.444) and digs (seven) with
Amy Schryver (six),
Kerry Swain (six), and
Peggy Clemens (five) also holding down the back row. Elmhurst totaled eight aces, while Cornell finished the match with six.
The Bluejays wrap up the Pikes Peak Challenge tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. when they face the host, ninth-ranked Colorado College.
