Elmhurst Stumbles Against St. Benedict

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team had its 11-match winning streak snapped in a 25-23, 25-15, 25-19 loss to 14th-ranked College of St. Benedict.

Elmhurst closed out its own invitational with a 3-1 record, including a pair of wins against top-25 squads. The Bluejays moved to 14-2 on the season with the loss.

Elmhurst jumped out to a quick 13-7 lead in the opening set, but St. Benedict rallied with an 8-2 run to pull even at 15-15. The two teams traded points to a 20-20 tie, but Elmhurst opened up a 22-20 lead after a kill by Shannon Burns and an error on St. Benedict. The Blazers rallied back with four straight points to take 24-22 lead before putting the first set away. 

The two teams traded point-for-point for the first 26 points of the second set, but a 6-1 run from St. Benedict gave the Blazers a 19-14 lead. St. Benedict closed the set with a 6-1 run to take a two sets to none advantage. 

Elmhurst opened up a small cushion at the start of the third set, but a 10-2 run from St. Benedict turned a four-point cushion into a four-point deficit. Leading by a point at 13-12, St. Benedict used a 7-3 run to take a 20-15 lead before closing out the set and the match.

Elmhurst hit .151 for the match with 32 kills and 16 errors in 106 attempts. Melissa Nava and Alli Rogers paced Elmhurst with six kills apiece in the loss. Sam Szarmach, Burns and Hannah Nimrick finished with five kills apiece. Nimrick totaled 26 assists and eight digs while Peggy Clemens led the team in digs with 13.

Laura Schmitt powered St. Benedict with 12 kills and Lexi Rinde added 10 kills in the win.

Elmhurst travels to the University of Chicago Invitational next Friday, September 26.
