Bluejays Stumble Against Coe

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season in a 25-20, 25-21, 25-16 defeat at the hands of Coe College.

With the score tied at 14 in the opening set, Coe (4-0) rattled off a 6-1 run to take a 20-15 lead. Elmhurst closed to within three points to two occasions, but Coe held on for the 25-20 win. The second set started in a near identical fashion as the two squads traded points and score even at 10-10. Coe slowly built a three-point cushion at 17-14, but Elmhurst closed to within one at 18-17 after a Sam Szarmach kill. Coe responded with two straight points to extend its cushion back to three at 20-17, but back-to-back errors on the Kohawks brought Elmhurst to within a point at 20-19. Coe built its lead back to three at 23-20 and then traded points with the Bluejays to secure the 25-21 win.

Coe started fast and never trailed in the third set as the Kohawks raced out to a 10-5 lead. Leading 15-10, Coe scored the next four points to open up a commanding 19-10 lead before cruising the rest of the way to the three-set victory.

Elmhurst hit just .151 for the match with 29 kills and 15 errors in 93 attempts. Coe totaled a .395 hitting percentage with 43 kills and nine errors in 86 attacks.

Szarmach and Jackie Pavilonis totaled seven kills apiece to lead the Bluejays' offense. Alli Rogers chipped in with five kills while Peggy Clemens led the squad in digs with 10. Hannah Nimrick totaled 19 assists in the loss.

The Bluejays struggled to stop Coe's Rachel Schaeffer as she finished with 16 kills while hitting .600 for the match. Rachel Bosworth added 10 ills and Mackenzie Harbaugh totaled 33 digs and two aces.

Elmhurst hosts Benedictine University and Carroll University in a quadrangular on Wednesday, September 3.
