Box Score NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team was outscored 31-12 over the final six minutes in a 111-92 loss at North Central College.
Elmhurst (10-6, 2-3 CCIW) trailed by as many as 10 points in the opening half and fell behind 49-43 at the break. North Central (9-7, 3-2 CCIW) opened up an early 11-point lead in the second half before Elmhurst answered back with a 17-6 run to knot the score with 13:35 remaining.
The Cardinals quickly reclaimed the lead, but a lay-up from
Devin Vaughn and four straight points from
Nikky Moan gave the Bluejays an 81-79 lead with 6:51 left.
North Central responded with a 17-5 run over the next 3:30 to open up a 10-point cushion after a lay-up from Bobbi Johns. The Cardinals closed the game with a 15-6 run to pull away for the 19-point victory.
Elmhurst struggled to hold on to the ball, turning the ball over 30 times resulting in 43 points for the Cardinals. Despite being outrebounded 54-46 in the contest, the Cardinals also turned 19 offensive rebounds into 24 second chance points.
Elmhurst finished the game shooting 44.9 percent (35-of-70) from the floor, but just 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from long range.
Melanie Schwerdtmann came off the bench to lead the Bluejays in the loss with 22 points.
Fiona McMahon added 16 points and 15 rebounds while
Katie Swanson scored 15.
Claire Monroe also reached double figures in scoring with 11.
Seven players reached double figures to lead the Cardinals in the win. Johns scored a team-best 16 points while Kimberly Wilson added 15. Kelsey Cooling and Laryann Shumaker scored 14 points apiece while Maryssa Cladis totaled 11. Lauren Hernandez and Uzuri Williams scored 10 points apiece.
The Cardinals attempted over half of their 85 total shots from beyond the arc, hitting 17-of-43 attempts from three-point range (39.5 percent) while shooting 42.4 percent (36-of-85) from the floor.
Elmhurst travels to Carthage College on Wednesday, January 22.
