RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Marci Novak totaled 29 kills over two matches to pace the fourth-ranked Elmhurst volleyball team to wins over Dominican and 13th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.
ELMHURST 3, DOMINICAN 0 - Elmhurst (6-0) opened the day with a 25-15, 25-21, 25-19 win over Dominican, exacting a measure of revenge for a 2012 loss.
Leading 11-9 in the opening set, the Bluejays used a 10-4 run to open up a 21-13 lead before putting the set away. Dominican battled back in the second, opening up a 19-12 cushion before the Bluejays battled back. Elmhurst ripped off a furious 13-2 run to storm past the Stars and take the second set. The Bluejays jumped out to a lead in the third set and never trailed. Leading 15-13, Elmhurst used a 7-2 run to pull away and finsh the Stars in three.
Elmhurst hit .242 for the match (50-18-132), the Bluejays smashed 21 of their 50 kills in the second set.
Novak led a balanced attack for Elmhurst, finishing with 13 kills (.379 attack percentage), 11 digs and four blocks. Sam Szarmach added 11 kills and a team-leading 17 digs. Kaitlyn Wilks totaled eight kills and five blocks while Megan Reynolds finished with seven kills and three blocks. Hannah Lessen added eight kills and 16 digs. Dana Loncar added 15 digs while Lauren Lorenz led the squad in assists with 22.
ELMHURST 3, UW-WHITEWATER 2 - The Bluejays improved to 6-0 on the season by scoring a five-set win over 13th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Bluejays defeated the Warhawks by a score of 25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 14-25, 15-10.
Tied at 11 in the opening set, the Bluejays used a 9-2 run to take command of the opening set and take a quick 1-0 lead. After committing just three errors int he opening set, the Bluejays made eight in the second half as Wisconsin-Whitewater opened up a 17-9 lead. Elmhurst pulled to within three points, but came no closer as the Warhawks evened the match at a set apiece.
Elmhurst used a late surge to take the third set. Knotted at 17-17, the Bluejays ripped off four straight points to take a 21-17 lead. The Warhawks pulled to within two points at 23-21, but back-to-back kills from Novak put the set away for Elmhurst.
The Warhawks hit their stride in the fourth set, pounding down 16 kills and hitting .353 as a team to cruise to the 25-14 win to send the match to a decisive fifth set.
The Bluejays started strong in the fifth, building a 6-1 lead, but the Warhawks stormed back, evening the match at 10-10. Kills from Katie Rueffer and Megan Reynolds gave Elmhurst a 12-10 lead and forced the Warhawks to burn a time out. A Whitewater error, a kill from Reynolds and a block from Reynolds and Szarmach ended the match for the Bluejays.
Novak paced the Bluejays with a team-leading 16 kills and three aces. Wilks added 11 kills and four blocks while Reynolds totaled six kills and six blocks. Lessen chipped in with six kills and 12 blocks while Szarmach finished with five kills and 12 digs. Lorenz totaled 24 kills while Rueffer finished with 16 assists, four kills and three blocks.
Elmhurst travels to the University of La Verne tournament on September 13-14.
