Box Score 2 LA VERNE, Calif. - The Elmhurst volleyball team rebounded from its first loss of the season by closing out the University of La Verne Tournament with a pair of victories.
Elmhurst, ranked fourth in the latest AVCA Division III poll, opened the day with a thrilling five-set, come-from-behind win over 24th-ranked Clarkson before sweeping the tournament host in three sets.
ELMHURST 3, CLARKSON 2 - In a match-up that featured two of last season's NCAA quarterfinalists, the Bluejays rallied for an impressive 24-26, 24-26, 25-18, 25-16, 15-11 win over Clarkson.
Leading 24-22 in the first set, Elmhurst (9-1) lost the next four points to drop the first set. The Bluejays led 24-23 in the second set, but Clarkson rattled off three straight points to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Elmhurst stormed back and rolled past Clarkson in the third and fourth set and quickly jumped out to a four-point lead in the fifth set. Clarkson pulled to within two points at 13-11 in the fifth set, but the Bluejays scored the next two points to seal the victory.
Sam Szarmach led Elmhurst in the win with 17 kills and three blocks.
Megan Reynolds added a double-double, finishing with 10 kills and 10 blocks.
Kaitlyn Wilks chipped in with 12 kills while
Jess Suarez added 11 kills in the win.
Marci Novak finished with eight kills and three aces.
Katie Rueffer totaled a team-leading 34 assists while
Lauren Lorenz finished with 28 assists and 18 digs.
Hannah Lessen recorded 32 digs while
Dana Loncar totaled 23.
ELMHURST 3, LA VERNE 0 - The Bluejays closed the tournament with a 25-17, 26-24, 25-9 win over the tournament host La Verne.
Wilks and Szarmach finished with 10 kills apiece to pace the Bluejays' attack. Reynolds pounded down nine kills and tallied five blocks while Wilks added four blocks and Szarmach tacked on three. Lessen totaled a team-leading 19 digs and three aces while Lorenz totaled 23 assists.
