Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - Nick Sanford poured in a career-high 28 points to lead the Elmhurst men's basketball team to its sixth straight victory in a 91-83 win over Fontbonne.
The two squads went back-and-forth for the start of the first half before Elmhurst used a 19-7 run to open up a 29-17 lead with seven minutes remaining. Fontbonne (1-6) slowly chipped away at the lead and sliced the lead down to just four points on Bryan DeGeare's three-pointer just before the buzzer. Elmhurst (6-2) led 41-37 at the half.
The Bluejays led by eight points with 14 minutes left in the second half, before Fontbonne ripped off a 15-0 run over the next 4:15 to take a 66-59 lead. Elmhurst answered back with free throws from
Taylor Baxter and buckets from
Will Nixon and two from Sanford. Sanford's three-point play with 5:23 left put the Bluejays on top 72-71.
Leading by just a point with 4:08 left, Sanford hit another three-point play to extend Elmhurst's lead to four points. After a bucket from Fontbonne,
Bryant Ackerman knocked down a three-pointer to give Elmhurst a five-point cushion with 3:22 remaining.
The Griffins trimmed Elmhurst's lead down to two points with 1:49 remaining, but Ackerman's second three-pointer of the game put the Bluejays back up by five. The Bluejays hit all six of their free throws down the stretch to pull away for the eight-point win.
Sanford finished with a career-best 28 points, shooting 11-of-17 from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. He added a game-high 12 rebounds in the victory. Four other Bluejays reached double figures in scoring in the win. Baxter totaled 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting while
Kyle Wuest added added 13 points. Ackerman totaled 14 points, with all of them coming in the second half. Nixon finished with 11 points and five rebounds for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst shot 46.0 percent (29-of-63) from the floor, including 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from three-point range. Fontbonne finished the contest shooting 42.9 percent (27-of-63), including 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from beyond the arc.
Jared Greenlee led the Griffins with 19 points in the loss. Blake Welch finished with 15 while DeGeare and Orkan Bakis totaled 13 points apiece.
Elmhurst travels to Austin College on December 18.
