Volleyball Team Advances to CCIW Tournament Championship

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team rolled into the championship match of the CCIW Tournament with a 25-19, 25-14, 25-22 win over Wheaton College.

Elmhurst, ranked fifth in the latest AVCA Division III poll, won their 12th straight contest and improved to 34-4 overall with the victory.

With the score tied at six in the opening set, Elmhurst used a 7-2 run to open up a 13-8 lead. Wheaton closed to within two points at 15-13, but the Bluejays responded with a 5-1 run to take a 20-14 lead before pulling away for the 25-19 win.

Elmhurst grabbed a 5-1 lead in the second set before extending their lead to 16-8 en route to the 25-14 win.

The two squads traded points for much of the third set with the score tied at 20-20. Wheaton took a 21-20 lead but a Megan Reynolds' kill evened the score at 21. Wheaton surged back in front on a kill from Andy DeMoss, but a block from Jackie Pavilonis and Reynolds tied the score at 22-22. Pavilonis and Kaitlyn Wilks combined for a block to give Elmhurst a 23-22 lead. Back-to-back kills from Pavilonis gave the Bluejays the set and the match.

Elmhurst finished the contest hitting .312 (47-13-109) while Wheaton hit .173 (35-17-104).

Marci Novak led the Bluejays in the win, pounding down 13 kills to go with five digs. Sam Szarmach and Pavilonis each finished with eight kills apiece. Pavilonis added four blocks for the Bluejays. Wilks and Reynolds totaled seven kills and four blocks apiece in the victory. Hannah Nimrick totaled a team-leading 21 assists while Lauren Lorenz added 14. Dana Loncar led the team in digs with 11 while Roda Mena added nine and Hannah Lessen totaled eight.

Maddie McGinnis led Wheaton (24-12) in the loss, finishing with 10 kills. Shelby Knowles added eight kills and DeMoss finished with seven.

Elmhurst hosts Millikin University in the tournament championship match tomorrow (November 9) at 4:30 p.m. Millikin advanced to the championship match by edging Carthage in five sets by a score of 25-19, 25-27, 21-25, 25-23, 17-15. The Big Blue had to fight off four match points from Carthage to earn the win.
