Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's soccer team was eliminated from the CCIW Tournament after falling 2-0 to Carthage College.
Carthage (13-6-1) controlled the tempo for the majority of the game, outshooting Elmhurst 19-6, including an 8-0 advantage in the opening half. The Red Men also had an 8-0 edge in corner kicks for the game.
Elmhurst's best chance in the opening half came on
Alex Safford's crossing attempt. Safford had lined up the cross for a header from
Andrew Witzofsky, but Carthage defender Atli Eirnarsson headed the ball away before Witzofsky could connect.
Despite Carthage outshooting Elmhurst 8-0 in the opening half, the game was still scoreless at the half. Carthage broke the tie in the 54th minute when Ryan Crane tucked a pass between a pair of Elmhurst defenders and Billy Hamilton tucked the ball into the upper corner of the net on the near post.
Carthage made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute. Drew Liogas got past an Elmhurst defender on the near sideline and sent a cross to the middle of the box to Michael Dembrowski. Dembrowski settled the pass and scored with a wide open look.
John Reglin took the loss in goal for the Bluejays, allowing two goals while recording seven saves. Nick Huftalin stopped the only shot he faced to earn the shutout for Carthage.
Elmhurst fell to 11-4-3 with the loss and will now have to hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The field of 61 teams will be announced on Monday afternoon.
