Bluejays Fall to Top-Ranked Calvin; Topple Heidelberg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The sixth-ranked Elmhurst volleyball team closed out the Midwest Volleyball Challenge by splitting a pair of contests at Calvin College.

The Bluejays opened the day with a three-set loss to top-ranked Calvin before rebounding to defeat Heidelberg in three sets. Elmhurst moved to 23-4 on the season with the split.

CALVIN 3, ELMHURST 0 - Elmhurst suffered its first back-to-back losses of the season after falling 25-14, 25-19, 25-16 to No. 1 Calvin.

Calvin used 13-4 run early in the first set to pull away for the 25-14 win. The second set was tighter as Elmhurst pulled even with Calvin at 17-17. Calvin closed the set on an 8-2 run to take a 2-0 lead. Calvin won the first point in the third set and never trailed, building a 6-1 lead. The Bluejays pulled to within a point at 8-7, but Calvin used a 10-3 run to open up an 18-10 before pulling away for the victory.

Hannah Nimrick led the Bluejays with six kills and seven assists in the loss. Shannon Burns, Marci Novak and Kaitlyn Wilks each finished with three blocks apiece. Burns added four blocks while Novak tallied a team-best 12 digs. Megan Reynolds added three kills and seven blocks for the Bluejays.

Errors did the Bluejays in as the squad finished with 24 errors, 27 kills and a .030 hitting percentage.

Maggie Kemp paced Calvin with 14 kills. Megan Rietema added six kills and 29 assists for the Knights.

ELMHURST 3, HEIDELBERG 0 - Elmhurst snapped their two-game slide with a convincing 25-18, 25-17, 25-9 win over Heidelberg.

Elmhurst broke open a 5-5 tie in the first set with a 10-4 run before pulling away for the 25-18 win. The Bluejays used a 12-5 run in the second set to break an 8-8 tie en route to a 25-17 win. The Bluejays ran away with the third set, scoring eight of the first 10 points en route to the 25-9 win.

Novak led the Bluejays with 12 kills and seven digs. Reynolds pounded down 11 kills and tallied three blocks. Sam Szarmach and Wilks added six kills apiece for the Bluejays. Jackie Pavilonis added five kills while Nimrick totaled five kills and 13 assists. Lauren Lorenz added a team-leading 15 assists while Hannah Lessen totaled a team-leading 10 digs.

Elmhurst travels to Wheaton College on October 15.
