Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team came up short in a a 65-61 loss to Carthage College, falling to 4-12 on the season.
The loss was the Bluejays fifth in a row, dropping the squad to 0-5 in the CCIW.
The back-and-forth contest featured 13 lead changes and seven ties. Carthage (7-9, 2-3 CCIW) led 29-26 at the half and opened up a quick six-point advantage in the second-half. Elmhurst quickly erased the deficit and knotted the score at 37-37. The Bluejays surged in front on a
Nick Sanford lay-up with with 12:19 to play and the two teams traded buckets over the next five minutes.
Carthage slowly built a seven-point lead with 2:27 to play but Elmhurst was able to make one last run.
Bryant Ackerman knocked down a three-pointer to bring Elmhurst to within four points with 1:45 left. After a pair of Carthage free throws,
D'Ante Foster converted a three-point play to pull Elmhurst to within three points with 43 seconds remaining.
Carthage pushed its lead back to four on a Donte Logan free throw, but
Alex Morgunov's lay-up with 23 seconds cut Elmhurst's deficit down to two points. After a pair of Carthage free throws with 22 seconds,
Taylor Baxter drained a three to make it a one-point game. Logan split a pair of free throws with nine seconds left, but the Bluejays turned the ball over on their final possession. Logan hit two free throws with one second left to seal the win for Carthage.
Elmhurst finished the contest shooting 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the field, but only 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from long distance. The Bluejays won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Carthage 45-35.
Nick Sanford led Elmhurst with 16 points and 15 rebounds in the loss. Foster finished with 14 points and five steals while Morgunov chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.
Carthage shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the floor, including 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from three-point range. Mitch Thompson led the Red Men with a game-high 21 points and a team-leading eight boards. Marlon Senior added nine points for Carthage.
Elmhurst travels to Augustana College on Saturday (January 19).
