Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team dropped its fourth straight contest, suffering a 76-68 loss to North Park University.
Elmhurst slipped to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in the CCIW with the loss while North Park moved to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in league play.
North Park used a 10-0 run early in the opening half to seize control and take a 17-7 lead. The Bluejays managed to trim the lead down to just one point with five minutes left in the half, but the Vikings ripped off 10 straight points over the next 1:39 to build an 11-point cushion (36-25). North Park led 40-29 at the half.
Elmhurst managed to cut the deficit down to single digits on several occasions in the second half, but North Park answered back each time. The Vikings built a 65-52 lead with 5:43 to play, but the Bluejays used a 7-2 run over the next 2:15 to pull to within five points. Elmhurst had a pair of chances to cut into the lead, but a turnover and a missed jumper allowed North Park to extend its lead to seven on a pair of Mark Holmes free throws. Elmhurst closed to within four points on a
Bryant Ackerman three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining, but North Park put the game away on the foul line by hitting four of their final six attempts.
North Park won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Elmhurst 37-31. The Vikings pulled down 12 offensive rebounds which led to 18 second-chance points.
Elmhurst finished the contest shooting 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the floor, including 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from beyond the arc.
Five Bluejays reached double figures in scoring with
Nick Sanford leading the way with 19 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds.
D'Ante Foster,
Alex Morgunov and Ackerman all scored 11 for the Bluejays while
Taylor Baxter finished with 10 points and six assists.
North Park shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field, but struggled from downtown, hitting just 26.3 percent (5-of-19). Holmes led the Vikings with a game-high 23 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the floor. Aaron Weaver came off the bench to post a double-double, finishing with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Chris Benjamin added nine points for the Vikings.
Elmhurst hosts Carthage College on Wednesday, January 16.
