Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Elmhurst College volleyball team, ranked 11th in the latest AVCA national poll, moved to 5-1 on the season after splitting a pair of matches against top-25 opponents at the Washington University (Mo.) Invitational.
Elmhurst opened the tournament with a 25-21, 25-12, 25-17 win over #24 Concordia College (Minn.), before falling to top-ranked Washington 18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 14-25.
ELMHURST 3, CONCORDIA 0 - The Bluejays won their fifth straight match to open the season by defeating the Cobbers in three sets.
Marci Novak led Elmhurst in the win with 11 kills.
Megan Reynolds added nine kills and five blocks while Antonéya Veasy Smith and
Kaitlyn Wilks chipped in with eight kills apiece.
Katie Rueffer finished with a team-high 18 assists while
Erin Thill totaled 15. Veasy Smith finished with a team-leading eight digs while
Perrie Morgan added seven for the Bluejays.
WASHINGTON 3, ELMHURST 1 - The Bluejays suffered their first loss of the season, falling to top-ranked Washington in four sets. Novak powered the Bluejays with 13 kills and 16 digs. Veasy Smith added 11 kills and 12 digs while Reynolds also reached double figures in kills with 11. Rueffer totaled 25 assists while Thill finished with 18. Morgan added a team-high 25 digs in the loss.
The Bluejays close the tournament with two more matches against top-25 teams. Elmhurst takes on #23 Otterbein and #12 Wisconsin-Whitewater on the tournament's second day.
