Volleyball Team Finishes Own Invite Unbeaten

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The 11th-ranked Elmhurst volleyball team finished its own Elmhurst Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record after closing the tournament with thrilling five-set win over 15th-ranked University of Chicago.

Elmhurst opened the second day of the tournament with a 3-0 win over Bethany Lutheran College.

ELMHURST 3, BETHANY LUTHERAN 0 - The Bluejays made short work of the Vikings, winning 25-12, 25-9, 25-14.

Megan Reynolds powered the Bluejays in the victory, hitting .588 with a team-leading 11 kills and three blocks. Antonéya Veasy Smith added nine kills and a team-high nine digs while hitting .444.

Kaitlyn Wilks chipped in with seven kills and two blocks while Sam Szarmach pounded down five kills while hitting .556. Erin Thill dished out 12 assists while leading the squad with five aces. Katie Rueffer added 12 assists while Erin Henson finished with seven. Hannah Lessen added five digs and three aces for the Bluejays.

ELMHURST 3, CHICAGO 2 - The Bluejays needed five sets to put away the 15th-ranked Maroons. The Bluejays' winning scores were 25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 17-25, 15-12.

Sam Szarmach led four Bluejays in double figures with kills. Szarmach pounded down a team-leading 19 kills while hitting .325.

Reynolds added 13 kills and two blocks while hitting .462 and Veasy Smith totaled 12 kills and 17 digs. Marci Novak added 11 kills, 12 digs and a pair of aces while Kaitlyn Wilks finished with nine kills and three blocks. Thill totaled 29 assists and 14 digs while Rueffer finished with 27 assists and two blocks.

Perrie Morgan led the Bluejays in digs, finishing with 23 while also contributing two aces.


Reynolds and Veasy Smith were both named to the all-tournament team for their performances. Reynolds totaled 35 kills and eight blocks while hitting .359. Veasy Smith finished with a team-leading 41 kills and 44 digs over the tournament.

Elmhurst (4-0) faces three nationally-ranked squads at next weekend's Washington University (Mo.)Tournament.
