11th-Ranked Bluejays Open Season With Pair of Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team, ranked 11th in the AVCA Preseason poll, opened the 2012 season with a pair of victories at the Elmhurst Invitational.

The Bluejays opened the night with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-21 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy. Elmhurst closed the night with a 25-16, 25-15, 25-12 victory over Lake Forest College

ELMHURST 3, COAST GUARD 0 - The Bluejays opened the season with a straight set win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

Antonéya Veasy Smith, Sam Szarmach and Megan Reynolds each put away eight kills to pace the Bluejays in the win. Szarmach added eight digs and three blocks while Reynolds added a pair of blocks for the Bluejays. Veasy Smith finished with eight digs. Kaitlyn Wilks chipped in with five kills and a pair of blocks while Marci Novak totaled four kills and a team-leading nine digs. Perrie Morgan added eight digs for the Bluejays while Erin Thill finished with 13 assists and five digs. Katie Rueffer led Elmhurst in assists with 17.


ELMHURST 3, LAKE FOREST 0 - The Bluejays made short work of the Forresters, upending Lake Forest in three sets. Elmhurst hit .282 as a team and committed just eight hitting errors.

Veasy Smith led the charge for the Bluejays, totaling team-highs in kills (12) and digs (10) while also adding three blocks and two aces.

Szarmach added six kills while Novak finished with four kills and eight digs. Morgan chipped in with seven digs and a pair of aces. Rueffer totaled a team-leading 18 assists and three blocks while Thill chipped in with eight assists. Wilks finished with three blocks for the Bluejays.

Elmhurst hosts Bethany Lutheran College tomorrow (Saturday, September 1) at 11:00 a.m. The Bluejays wrap up the tournament by clashing with 15th-ranked University of Chicago at 3:00 p.m.
