Bluejays' Upset Bid Falls Short Against Eighth-Ranked Washington

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team's upset bid of eighth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis came up short, as the Bluejays fell 70-54 at R.A. Faganel Hall.

Elmhurst (2-2) had a five-point second-half lead against Washington (4-1), but the Bears used a 10-0 run over a three-minute span to open up a 45-40 lead. The Bluejays pulled to within a point with 12 minutes to go, but Washington slowly built up its lead, establishing a double-digit cushion with 5:43 left to play and pulling away for the 16-point victory.

After shooting only 30.6 percent (11-of-36) in the opening half, Washington picked up its offense in the second, hitting 46.9 percent (15-of-32) of its shots to finish the game shooting 38.2 percent (26-of-68) from the floor. The Bears dominated on the glass in the second half. Washington outrebounded Elmhurst 26-13 in the second half, including an 11-3 edge on the offensive glass. The Bears turned 24 offensive rebounds into 25 second-chance points.

Elmhurst finished the game shooting 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor. The Bluejays opened the contest shooting 44.8 percent (13-of-29), but shot only 29.2 percent (7-of-24) in the second half.

Tess Godhardt totaled 13 points to lead Elmhurst in the loss. Fiona McMahon finished with eight points and eight rebounds while Karen Senette and Stephanie Mitchell totaled eight points apiece. Nikky Moan and Kim Schwerdtmann added six points each for the Bluejays.

Melissa Gilkey poured in 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting to lead the Bears in the win. Alyssa Johanson added 16 points while Maddy Scheppers dropped in 14. Jordan Thompson dished out 1 assists for the Bears while Steph Vukotic came off the bench to score 10.
