Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team fell to 0-2 on the season after dropping a 72-71 overtime contest to the University of Dubuque at the Bluejays' home-opening contest at R.A. Faganel Hall.
Elmhurst led by as many as 17 points in the opening half and built a six-point lead in overtime, but Dubuque closed the game on a 9-2 run to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Bluejays scored the game's first eight points and then used a 16-5 run over a five-minute span in the first half to take a commanding 37-20 lead. The Spartans scored the final six points of the opening half to close to within 11 points at halftime.
Dubuque continued its surge in the second half, using a 20-6 run for the first eight minutes to open up a 48-45 lead. Elmhurst answered back, building a five-point lead on
Alex DeBack's jumper with 7:17 left on the clock. The Spartans evened the score at 58-58 and then took a 61-58 lead on Chris Frazier's three-pointer with 2:50 left to play. A pair of free throws from
D'Ante Foster brought Elmhurst to within a point with two minutes to play.
Nick Sanford split a pair of free throws with 1:13 left to knot the score at 61-61 Following a turnover by the Spartans, Elmhurst had a pair of chances to win the game at the end of regulation but a missed three-pointer and a turnover sent the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Elmhurst opened on an 8-2 run and built a six-point lead when
Taylor Baxter splashed home a three-pointer. Dubuque responded with seven straight points to take a 70-69 lead on Mitch Michaelis' jumper with 33 seconds left. Elmhurst went back on top 19 seconds later on
Alex Morgunov's lay-up. Frazier missed a three-pointer with seven seconds left and then rebound bounced around and into the hands of Derek Griffin who layed the ball in with two seconds left to hand the Spartans the win.
Elmhurst finished the game shooting 50.0 percent (30-of-60) from the floor, but only 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from downtown. The Bluejays struggled from the foul line, hitting only 7-of-13 attempts (53.8 percent). Dubuque hit 43.5 percent (27-of-62) of its shots from the field, including 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from three-point range. The Spartans converted 13-of-18 attempts from the foul line. The Spartans outrebounded the Bluejays on the glass 41-31.
Four players reached double figures for Elmhurst in the loss. Baxter poured in 15 points shooting 6-of-8 from the field while also dishing out four assists. Jared Mysliwiec added 12 points while Morgunov and Sanford dropped in 11 points apiece.
D'Ante Foster added nine points and four steals while
Erik Dornfeld came off the bench to score nine.
Dubuque was led by Jordan Townsend's double-double if 13 points and 10 rebounds. Michaelis came off the bench to score 13 while Frazier finished with 10. Griffin added nine points in the win for the Spartans.
Elmhurst will look for its first win of the season next Thursday, when the Bluejays host Concordia University (Wis.). Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
