Volleyball Team Topples Pair of Top-20 Teams

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team, ranked 10th in the latest AVCA poll, scored a pair of wins over top-20 opponents at the first day of the Elmhurst Invitational.

The Bluejays improved to 23-7 on the season with the pair of victories. Elmhurst opened the day with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-22 win over #20 Wisconsin-Stevens Point and closed out the first night with a 25-23, 32-30, 25-16 win over 13th-ranked Wartburg College.

ELMHURST 3, UW-STEVENS POINT 0 - Elmhurst opened the day with a sweep of 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point.

Antonéya Veasy Smith and Sam Szarmach led the charge for the Bluejays with 10 kills apiece. Szarmach added 11 digs while Veasy Smith totaled a pair of blocks. Marci Novak added eight kills while Kaitlyn Wilks finished with seven. Megan Reynolds totaled six kills and three blocks. Erin Thill led the squad in assists with 28 while also adding 11 digs. Katie Rueffer finished with 12 assists and three blocks while Hannah Lessen totaled a team-leading 20 digs.

ELMHURST 3, WARTBURG 0 - Elmhurst toppled Wartburg for the second time this season with a 25-23, 32-30, 25-16 win over the Knights.

Szarmach hammered down 13 kills while hitting .462 to lead the Bluejays in the win. Novak reached double figures in kills with 10 while adding five digs and two blocks. Wilks finished with seven kills and a team-leading six blocks while Reynolds totaled six kills and two blocks. Thill led the squad in assists with 23 while also adding 12 digs. Lessen totaled a team-leading 16 digs while Rueffer chipped in with 16 digs.

Elmhurst wraps up the tournament by facing Vassar College and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire tomorrow afternoon.
