Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. - After opening the Hope College Tournament with a four-set loss to Dominican, the Elmhurst volleyball team scored its biggest win of the season with a 3-0 sweep of second-ranked Calvin College.
Elmhurst, ranked ninth in the latest AVCA poll, opened the day with a 22-25, 25-22, 25-27, 19-25 loss to Dominican to drop to 18-6 on the season. The Bluejays bounced back from the loss with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-23 win over second-ranked Calvin.
DOMINICAN 3, ELMHURST 1 - The Bluejays dropped their second straight contest and suffered their first loss to an unranked opponent in a four-set loss to Dominican.
Marci Novak led the Bluejays in the loss, finishing with a team-leading 16 kills. Antonéya Veasy Smith added 11 kills and
Sam Szarmach also reached double figures in kills with 10.
Erin Thill finished with a team-leading 42 assists to go along with 15 digs.
Hannah Lessen registered a squad-high 30 digs while
Dana Loncar added 16.
Megan Reynolds led the Bluejays in blocks with five.
ELMHURST 3, CALVIN 0 - The Bluejays ended Calvin's 10-match winning streak and handed the Kinghts just their second loss of the season with the three-set win.
After falling behind 13-10 in the opening set, Elmhurst ripped off seven straight points, including four aces from
Hannah Lessen to take a 17-14 lead. The Bluejays opened up a five-point cushion and hung on for the 25-21 win.
In the second set, the Bluejays built an early four-point cushion, but Calvin answered back and grabbed the lead at 14-13. Elmhurst evened the match and the two squads traded points unt the score was even at 17. A block by the Bluejays and an ace from
Katie Rueffer gave the Bluejays a 19-17 lead. Calvin pulled to within a point at 21-20, but the Bluejays closed out the set with four straight points.
Elmhurst started strong in the third set, taking a 5-1 lead and forcing Calvin to burn a timeout. The Knights slowly chipped away at the Elmhurst lead and pulled in front of the Bluejays at 15-14. Calvin built a 17-15 lead, but three kills and a block by Elmhurst gave the Bluejays a 19-17 lead Calvin came back to even the score at 21-all, but kills from Veasy Smith and Reynolds and an ace by Thill gave the Bluejays three match points. Calvin fought of the first two match points, but a kill by Reynolds put the match away for the Bluejays.
Reynolds finished with 11 kills and six blocks to lead the Bluejays. Veasy Smith added nine kills while Novak chipped in with seven. Lessen led the Bluejays in digs with 28 while Thill finished with 21 assists.
Elmhurst takes on Wisconsin Lutheran and sixth-ranked Hope on the tournament's second day.
