Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team slipped to 10-10 overall following a 70-59 loss to North Central College.
North Central (14-6, 8-1 CCIW) outscored Elmhurst (4-5 CCIW) 13-3 over the game's final five minutes to pull away for the 11-point victory.
The first half featured four lead changes and seven ties as the Cardinals built 32-28 cushion at the half with a late basket from Ryan Broyles.
With leading scorer Landon Gamble on the bench with four fouls, Derek Raridon took over for the Cardinals in the second half. North Central slowly built a seven-point lead with 8:30 to play, but the Bluejays pulled to within a point with 5:19 to go. Raridon proved to be to much for the Bluejays down the stretch, scoring 11 straight points for the Cardinals as North Central opened up 68-59 advantage with 1:36 left on the clock. Kevin Gillespie hit a pair of free throws to give the Cardinals the 11-point victory.
After shooting 55.0 percent (11-of-20) in the opening half, the Bluejays struggles in the second hitting only 11-of-29 attempts to finish the game shooting 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor. Elmhurst shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from downtown while struggling from the foul line, hitting only 8-of-14 free throw attempts (57.1 percent).
North Central ended the game shooting 50.0 percent (22-of-44), including 58.8 percent (10-of-17) in the second half. The Cardinals connected on 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) three-point attempts, including 4-of-5 in the second half. North Central was solid from the charity stripe, hitting 20-of-22 attempts (90.9 percent).
Nick Sanford led Elmhurst with 14 points and nine rebounds.
D'Ante Foster chipped in with 11 points while
Zack Boyd scored 10.
Jerome Robinson added nine points and
Brandon Grubl came off the bench to score eight.
Elmhurst had no answer for Raridon. The Cardinals' junior pumped in a game-high 30 points, including 23 in the second half. Vince Kmiec added nine points while Broyles and Aaron Tiknis scored eight points apiece.
Elmhurst travels to Wheaton College on Saturday, February 4.
