ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to Millikin University, falling to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in the CCIW.
Millikin (10-2, 2-0 CCIW) rallied from a set down to earn the 23-25, 25-15, 25-15 ,25-18 win over the Bluejays.
The first set was back-and-forth, with neither team able to open up more than a two-point advantage until Elmhurst surged ahead to take a 24-20 lead. Millikin won the next three points to close to within a point, but
Sam Szarmach hammered the ball down the line to take the first set for the Bluejays.
The second set started out in similar fashion, until Millikin used a pair of runs to open up a commanding 10-point lead and score the 25-15 win. The Big Blue remained on the gas to open the third set, racing out to an early lead and coasting to another 25-15 win.
The Big Blue jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the fourth set, but Elmhurst answered back with a 7-1 run to tie the score at 11-11. Millikin slowly pulled away from the Bluejays, scoring the 25-18 victory to seal the match.
Megan Reynolds led Elmhurst's offense with 10 kills and five blocks.
Kaitlyn Wilks added nine kills while
Antonéya Veasy Smith finished with eight. Szarmach chipped in with seven kills for the Bluejays.
Perrie Morgan led the squad in digs with 19 while
Erin Thill totaled a team-leading 22 digs. Elmhurst struggled with both their passing and attacking in the final three sets. The Bluejays committed 22 hitting errors and finished with a .099 team attacking percentage.
Elmhurst travels to the University of Chicago Tournament on September 23-24.
