ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College volleyball team opened the 2011 season by splitting a pair of matches at the Elmhurst College Invitational. The Bluejays toppled Dominican University 25-14, 25-13, 25-18 before falling in the nightcap to 25th-ranked University of Chicago 22-25, 22-25, 25-15, 23-25.
ELMHURST 3, DOMINICAN 0 - The Bluejays raced out to big leads in all three sets, cruising to the three-set victory. Elmhurst finished the match with a team-hitting percentage of .447 while committing only six attacking errors.
Middle hitters
Kaitlyn Wilks and
Megan Reynolds led the charge for the Bluejays. Wilks hit .667 while totaling 10 kills in 15 attempts. Reynolds hit. 571 with nine kills in 14 attempts. Reynolds also added four blocks in the victory.
Antonéya Veasy Smith added seven kills for the Bluejays while freshman
Sam Szarmach made her collegiate debut with a five-kill,15-dig performance.
Perrie Morgan chipped in with 15 digs while
Marci Novak totaled three kills and 12 digs in the victory.

CHICAGO 3, ELMHURST 1- The Bluejays fell to 1-1 on the season after dropping a hard-fought four-set loss to the 25th-ranked Maroons. Chicago edged out Elmhurst 25-22 in the first two sets before the Bluejays stormed back in the third with a 10-point victory. The fourth and final set was back-and-forth, with neither team opening up more than a four-point lead. The match was tied at 23-23 with Elmhurst serving, but Chicago scored back-to-back points to take the set and win the match.
Reynolds led Elmhurst in the loss with 11 kills and five blocks. Szarmach chipped in with 10 kills and eight digs while Veasy Smith totaled seven kills. Morgan led the Bluejays in digs with 23 while Novak totaled 17 digs to go along with six kills.
Katie Rueffer totaled a team-leading 21 assists while Thill tallied 18 assists and three aces.
Elmhurst continues play in the tournament by hosting John Carroll University and Lake Forest College on Saturday (September 3).
