PELLA, Iowa - Brandon Fritz scored in the 87th minute to lift Central College to a 2-1 victory over the Elmhurst College men's soccer team in both teams' season-opening contest.
Central outshot Elmhurst 9-3 in the opening half and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Jonathan Schroeder netted an unassisted goal to put the Dutch on top.
Central's lead held into the 84th minute when the Dutch were whistled for a foul in the box.
Henrique Boscolo converted the ensuing penalty kick for the Bluejays to knot the score at one.
The tie lasted only a little more than three minutes when Fritz scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Brandon Bautista.
Central outshot Elmhurst 14-8 for the contest and the Dutch finished with an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
John Reglin made the start in goal for the Bluejays and took the loss, allowing both Dutch goals while recording four saves. David Ziemann and Tim Maggard shared duties in net for the Dutch. Maggard earned the victory, allowing just one goal while making four saves.
Elmhurst will look to even its record on Saturday (September 3), when the Bluejays travel to Simpson College.
