DECATUR, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team wrapped up the 2011 season by holding off Millikin University for an 85-82 victory.
The win by Elmhurst snapped an eight-game skid by the Bluejays.
Millikin (1-24, 0-14 CCIW) jumped out to to a quick 12-2 lead, but Elmhurst responded with a 17-5 run to take a 19-17 lead. The two teams traded buckets for the next several minutes with Millikin tying the score at 34-34 with two minutes to play. Elmhurst opened up a 43-39 lead at the half.
Elmhurst opened the second half on a 26-15 run to open up a 15-point advantage with 11:44 left to play. Millikin chipped the lead down to just nine points with 2:42 to play. Five straight points but the Big Blue sliced Elmhurst's lead down to just four points with 1:54 remaining. The Bluejays' lead remained at four points with under a minute to play, until Rodney Clark split a pair of free throws with 17 seconds to play.
After an Elmhurst missed free throw, the Big Blue's Kyle Taylor was fouled while shooting a three-pointer. Taylor missed his first free throw but hit his next two to pull Millikin to within a point with eight seconds left on the clock.
James Robertson hit a pair of free throws to give the Bluejays an 85-82 lead. Justin Thompson's game-tying three-point attempt came up short in the closing seconds.
Elmhurst finished the contest shooting 54.4 percent (31-of-57) from the floor, including a whopping 65.0 percent (13-of-20) from beyond the arc. Millikin also shot over 50 percent from the floor, hitting 55.1 percent (27-of-49) of its shots.
Zack Boyd paced the Bluejays in the win, finishing with 24 points while shooting 10-of-13 from the floor. Boyd added seven rebounds and three assists in the win. Robertson finished with a career-high 21 points, shooting 7-of-10 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from downtown.
Erik Ellingson came off the bench to score 11 for Elmhurst while
Aaron Schroeder finished with nine.
Millikin was led by Taylor's 29-point, nine-rebound performance. Matt Merigan finished with 13 points while Thompson and Jacob Shasteen finished with 11 points apiece.
Elmhurst wrapped up the season with an 8-17 overall record and a 3-11 finish in the CCIW.
