KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst College men's soccer team's season came to a close after falling 4-3 in overtime to Carthage College in the semifinals of the CCIW Tournament.
Elmhurst (8-7-4) trailed 1-0 at halftime, but the Bluejays grabbed a 3-2 lead with just under seven minutes left to play in regulation. Carthage (13-5-2) evened the score with just under three minutes left on the clock and the Red Men's Michael Dombrowski headed home the game-winning goal just 3:15 into extra time to give Carthage the 4-3 victory.
Playing with the wind in the opening half, Carthage grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Jordan Innis connected on a Rafal Zalewski pass to put the Red Men on top.
Carthage's lead held until the 71st minute when
Matt Sterner scored his first of two goals to knot the score at 1-1. The Red Men surged back in front in the 78th minute on Billy Hamilton's fourth goal of the season.
The Red Men's lead did not last long, as Elmhurst evened the score less than a minute later when Sterner bent home a corner kick to tie the game at two.
The Bluejays grabbed their first lead of the game with just 6:40 left on the clock. Sterner's corner kick attempt was deflected by Carthage, but the ball came back to Sterner and he chipped the ball into the box where
Austin Haas sent the ball into the back of the net to give Elmhurst a 3-2 lead.
Carthage tied the game just 2:56 left on the clock when Zalewski's long blast deflected past Elmhurst keeper
John Reglin and into the back of the net.
The Bluejays nearly won the game in the closing seconds, but
Brian McMahon's redirect in front sailed just high.
In overtime, Dylan Tucker sent a cross into the box and Dombrowski headed the ball home to lift Carthage to the 4-3 victory.
Carthage held a slight 15-14 edge in shots and a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Reglin recorded six saves in net for the Bluejays while Milan Tijanic stopped seven shots in goal for the Red Men.
Carthage will face North Park in the CCIW Tournament Championship.
