Bluejays Stun #7 Carthage; Upend Wartburg

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -
The Elmhurst College volleyball team upset seventh-ranked Carthage College and also toppled Wartburg College to finish the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.

Elmhurst, ranked 25th in the latest AVCA poll, opened the day with a thrilling five-set win over CCIW rival Carthage before closing out the tournament with a four-set victory over Wartburg.

ELMHURST 3, CARTHAGE 2 - For the third time in as many days, the Bluejays toppled an opponent in the top-25 of the AVCA poll by rallying to defeat Carthage 14-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 15-13.

Carthage easily won the opening set before the Bluejays evened the match with a convincing win in the second set. Carthage opened up an early 17-10 lead in the third and held off a late rally from the Bluejays to take the third set 25-22.

With the score tied at 10-10 in the fourth set, the Bluejays ripped off seven straight points to take a 17-10 lead before cruising to the 25-17 win.

In the fifth and deciding set, Carthage opened up a 10-7 lead before Elmhurst rallied for the win. Four Carthage errors and a kill by Hannah Lessen gave Elmhurst a 12-10 lead. Carthage answered back with consecutive points to knot the score at 12-12, but a kill from Kaitlyn Wilks and a block by Megan Reynolds and Taylor Rasmussen gave Elmhurst a 14-12 lead. Carthage fought off one match point but Sam Szarmach recorded a kill to give Elmhurst the match.

Szarmach led Elmhurst's offense with 16 kills and 14 digs. Reynolds recorded 13 kills and a match-high nine blocks while Antonéya Veasy Smith totaled 10 kills and five blocks. Rasmussen added nine kills while Erin Thill led the squad in assists with 38. Perrie Morgan totaled 30 digs for the Bluejays.

Lauren Dembkowski led Carthage with 14 kills and 27 digs. Michelle Madeja added 16 kills and 20 digs in the Lady Reds' first loss since September 9.

The Elmhurst win marked the Bluejays' first victory over Carthage since the 2005 season.

ELMHURST 3, WARTBURG 1 - Elmhurst wrapped up the tournament with a 25-16, 25-22, 14-25, 25-23 victory over Wartburg College.

Reynolds led he Bluejays with 12 kills and two blocks in the victory while Veasy Smith added eight kills. Wilks finished with seven kills and Szarmach added six for Elmhurst. Thill totaled a team-leading 27 assists while Morgan led the squad in digs with 10.

Veasy Smith and Morgan were named to the all-tournament team for their play.

Elmhurst travels to Wheaton College on Tuesday, October 11.
