ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's soccer team fell 3-2 in overtime to Augustana College, yet secured a spot in the CCIW Tournament.
Elmhurst earned the fourth seed in the upcoming CCIW Tournament after Carthage College topped Illinois Wesleyan in overtime.
Augustana (13-6-0, 3-4-0 CCIW) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a pair of second half goals. Nick Wolfe put the Vikings up 1-0 in the 52nd minute after he scored on a Sean Fidlow assist. Fidlow made it 2-0 in favor of Augustana in the 74th minute after he converted a penalty kick opportunity.
The Bluejays mounted a furious rally, scoring twice in a four-minute span to even the match.
Matt Sterner cut the lead in the half with a goal in the 76th minute.
Kyle Smith scored the game-tying goal in the 80th minute off of an assist from
Michael Delong.
Augustana's Brett Beleecher gave the Vikings the victory just 3:14 into the first overtime when he scored off of a John McSpadden assist.
Elmhurst (8-6-4, 3-2-2 CCIW) outshot Augustana 20-12 in the contest, including a 14-5 edge in the second half.
John Reglin took the loss in net for the Bluejays, allowing three goals and recording three saves. Three different keepers split time in net for the Vikings. Steven Sahrobsky stopped two shots in the first half. Tyler Cowherd allowed a goal and made five saves before receiving a red card. Brett Johnson earned the win in relier, allowing one goal and making two saves.
With Carthage's win over Illinois Wesleyan, the Red Men secured the top seed in the CCIW Tournament. Elmhurst will travel to Kenosha on Wednesday (November 2) to face the Red Men.
