Men's Hoops Team Falls to Wheaton in Final Seconds

ELMHURST, Ill. -
The Elmhurst College men's basketball team's rally fell just short as the Bluejays were downed by Wheaton College 68-67 in the closing seconds of the game.

Elmhurst (7-10, 2-4 CCIW) overcame a 16-point first half deficit to take a 35-31 lead at halftime. The Bluejays trailed 22-6 midway through the opening half, but the Bluejays closed the half on a 29-9 run to take a four-point lead at the break.

In the second half, Wheaton (12-5, 3-3 CCIW) opened up a 61-52 lead with 7:42 left to play, but the Bluejays used a 12-3 run to knot the score at 64-6 with 2:18 left to play. Wheaton's Tyler Peters put the Thunder back on top with a jumper with 1:38 remaining. Elmhurst's D'Ante Foster knocked down a jumper to even the score at 64-all with 1:04 left to play. After a Wheaton miss, Elmhurst had a chance to take the final shot, but Wheaton was whistled for a foul with 20 seconds left to play as the Bluejays were calling for timeout. Joe Acosta split a pair of free throws to put the Bluejays up 67-66. With just eight seconds left to go, Wheaton's Andrew Jahns hit a baseline jumper to put the Thunder up 68-67.

Elmhurst has a pair of chances in the closing seconds, but the Bluejays' jumper and put-back attempt came up short, allowing the Thunder to escape with the the one-point victory.

Elmhurst shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the floor, including 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from beyond the arc. Zack Boyd led Elmhurst with 18 points and seven rebounds. James Robertson added a season-high 17 points by knocking down five three-pointers. Foster added eight points in the loss.

Wheaton shot 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the floor, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the arc. Jahns totaled 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting to lead the Thunder. Jon DeMoss added 14 points while Tim McCrary and Jeremy Pflederer scored 10 points apiece.

Elmhurst travels to North Central College on Wednesday, January 26.
