ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College volleyball team scored its second consecutive CCIW victory by upending North Central College 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-11.
The win was Elmhurst's first win over the Cardinals since the 2006 season.
Elmhurst (7-5, 2-0 CCIW) battled back and forth with the Cardinals in the opening set. North Central (6-7, 0-2 CCIW) led 22-20, but the Bluejays rattled off five straight points with
Megan Reynolds recording back-to-back blocks to end the set for Elmhurst.
The Bluejays led the second set 21-14, but three straight Cardinal points forced Elmhurst to burn a time out. A service error by the Cardinals wrapped up the set for the Bluejays.
Trailing early in the third set, Elmhurst opened up a 17-14 lead, but the Cardinals ran off five straight points to build a 19-17 cushion. Elmhurst erased the deficit and had a 23-22 edge, but a ball handling error on the Bluejays allowed the Cardinals to even the score. North Central scored the next two points to force a fourth set.
In the fourth set, Elmhurst jumped out to an 11-6 lead and never looked back, routing the Cardinals 25-11 to wrap-up the match.
Meghan Mullaney pounded down 10 kills to lead the Bluejays in the victory. Reynolds added nine kills and a team-leading five blocks.
Janelle Thompson and
Kaitlyn Wilks finished with seven kills apiece.
Hannah Lessen finished with a team-leading 14 digs while
Perrie Morgan chipped in with 12.
Katie Rueffer totaled 21 assists and 11 digs.
Erin Thill tallied 16 assists and nine digs.
Elmhurst travels to the New York University for the NYU Invitational on September 24-25
