ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's soccer team dropped to 3-3 on the season following a 2-1 loss to ninth-ranked Dominican University at Berens Park.
After a scoreless first half, Dominican's Lio Tovar put the Stars on the scoreboard in the 54th minute when he lofted a shot past a drawn out
Sebastian Domczewski and into the back of the net. The Stars took a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute when Jeff Atkins redirected a free kick from Michael Kapusta.
Elmhurst sliced the lead in half in the 83rd minute when
Brian McMahon headed home a
Keith Thurman throw in.
Elmhurst tried furiously to knot the score in the closing seconds as the Bluejays outshot Dominican 4-0 in the game's final five minutes. Elmhurst had a chance to tie the game with 40 seconds to play but Dominican keeper Maxwell Gutbrod made a diving save on
Sean Sullivan's shot to keep the Stars in front. The Bluejays had one final chance in the closing seconds, but
David Griggs header off of a throw in sailed just wide, giving Dominican the win.
Each team had scoring chances in the opening half of play. Kapusta's had a shot tip off the goal post just four minutes into the game. McMahon had a scoring chance in the 11th minute, but his header caught the crossbar and sailed just over the net. Dominican's defense swept away a
Matt Sterner shot just before it found the net in the 25th minute.
Elmhurst outshot Dominican 16-12 in the game, including a 9-4 advantage in the second half. The Bluejays also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Domczewski recorded five saves in net for the Bluejays while Gutbrod finished with four saves for the Stars.
Elmhurst travels to Adrian College on Saturday, September 18.
