Bluejays Fall to Sixth-Ranked Washington

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team dropped to 2-5 on the season following a 61-36 loss to sixth-ranked Washington University in the championship game of Washington's McWilliams Classic.

The Bluejays struggled with their shooting, shooting a season-low 22.2 percent (12-of-54) from the floor while being held to their lowest offensive output since the 2007 season. 

Elmhurst raced out to a quick 8-0 lead while holding Washington (5-1) without a point for the game's opening six minutes. The Bears responded with a 15-0 run over the next five minutes to open up a 15-8 lead. After leading 8-0, the Bluejays scored just six points over the next 14 minutes and trailed 31-14 at halftime.Elmhurst shot only 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from the floor in the opening half, and had just one bucket over the final 14:30 of the half.

Washington never allowed the Bluejays to get closer than a 15-point second half deficit, as the Bears opened up a 26-point advantage and cruised to the 61-36 victory.

Meghan Merklein scored a team-leading nine points for Elmhurst in the loss. Devin Vaughn added seven points while Megan Ney totaled six points and five rebounds.

Washington was led by Annie Sayers' 12 points. Jordan Rettig and Lucy Montgomery added seven points apiece while Alex Hoover chipped in with six. The Bears shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the floor in the victory.

Washington controlled the glass, outrebounding Elmhurst 52-31 in the game. The Bears converted 20 offensive rebounds in 20 second-chance points. 

Elmhurst travels to MacMurray College on Wednesday, December 8.
