ELMHURST, Ill. - On election day, the Elmhurst College volleyball team punched its ticket for the 2010 CCIW Tournament by defeating North Central College 25-18, 25-22, 30-28 in a CCIW Tournament play-in match.
Elmhurst cruised to the 25-18 win in the opening set. In the second set, Elmhurst opened up an 18-12 lead only to have the Cardinals pull to within two points. The Bluejays traded points with the Cardinals and came away with the 25-22 victory. In the the third set, Elmhurst opened up a 17-14 advantage but the Cardinals scored the next four points to take an 18-17 lead. Elmhurst battled back and reclaimed the lead, but the Cardinals fought off four match points before Elmhurst was able to put the match away with a 30-28 win in the final set.
Antonéya Veasy Smith led Elmhurst with 10 kills.
Janelle Thompson added nine kills for the Bluejays while
Hannah Lessen totaled eight kills and 12 digs.
Megan Reynolds turned in a six-kill, five-block performance for the Bluejays.
Erin Thill set up 23 points for the Bluejays while
Katie Rueffer added 13 assists.
Melissa Miehlke finished with a team-leading 17 digs while
Perrie Morgan totaled 13 digs and a pair of aces.
Elmhurst will face Carthage College in the first round of the CCIW Tournament on Friday, (November 5). Top-seeded Millikin University will host the tournament. Starting times will be announced later this week.
