Men's Soccer Outlasts Augustana

Box Score

ELMHURST, Ill. - Randy Warren scored on a penalty kick in the 81st minute to propel the Elmhurst College men's soccer team to a 4-3 win over Augustana College.

Elmhurst (6-2-1 overall, 1-0-0 in CCIW play) led on three separate occasions and outshot Augustana (3-5-0 overall, 1-1-0 in the CCIW) 19-10 overall, but the Bluejays could not put away the Vikings until Warren converted the penalty kick.

Matt Sterner gave Elmhurst a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when he scored off of a Luke Froehlich cross in front of the net. The Bluejays' lead was short-lived as Augustana's Eric Love collected a loose ball at the top of the box and fired a shot home from 25 yards out in the 31st minute. The score was knotted at one at the half.

Elmhurst reclaimed the lead in the 60th minute when Froehlich fed Ken Miller on a give-and-go and Miller beat Augustana keeper Mike Dolan with a shot. Augustana evened the score on a penalty kick in the 76th minute. Elmhurst defender Randy Warren slid to block an Augustana shot attempt but the ball ricocheted off Warren's arms and Elmhurst was whistled for a hand-ball in the box. John Linden converted the penalty kick to knot the score at two.

Miller netted his second goal of the game in the 78th minute to once again lift Elmhurst to a lead. Brian McMahon headed a Keith Thurman throw-in to an open Miller who score to put the Bluejays back on top.

Less than a minute later, Augustana evened the score for the third time when Linden found a wide open Dave Shrigley for a shot.

Less than two minutes after Augustana evened the score at three, Elmhurst recaptured the lead when Warren scored on the penalty kick. The penalty kick was awarded after McMahon was taken down in the box on an Elmhurst corner kick attempt.

Sebastian Domczewski recorded a pair of saves to earn the win in net for Elmhurst. Dolan tallied five saves for the Vikings while taking the loss.

Elmhurst travels to the University of Chicago on Wednesday, September 30.
