HOLLAND, Mich. - Matt Sterner scored the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime to lift the Elmhurst College men's soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Hope College.
Trailing 2-1 with under 30 seconds to play, the Bluejays received a corner kick. Elmhurst packed the every player on the field, including goalkeeper Sebastian Domczewski into the box. Ken Miller put home the corner kick from Sterner to knot the score at two with just 23 seconds left on the clock.
Sterner capped the comeback when he raced past the Hope defense and beat goalkeeper Andrew Goorhouse just 3:09 into the extra period.
The game was tied at 1-1 at the half.Brian McMahon put Elmhurst on top in the 29th minute when he scored of a Keith Thurman assist. Hope's Jeffrey Ekdom evened the score in the 35th minute when he scored off a David Whitaker feed. The Flying Dutch grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 76th minute after Gabe Courey netted a goal.
Domczewski recorded five saves to earn the win for the Bluejays in goal.
Elmhurst (4-1-1) entered the game ranked eighth in the latest NSCAA Central Region poll while Hope (3-2-0) was ranked sixth.
The Bluejays host Loras College at Langhorst Field on Sunday, September 20, at 2:00 p.m.
