Men's Basketball Team Knocks Off Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. -
Dustin Bainter scored a career-high 26 points and Aaron Schroeder added a career-high 16 points to lead the Elmhurst College men's basketball team to a 94-87 victory over the University of Redlands.

Elmhurst (2-2) overcame an early 11-point deficit to rally for the win. The Bluejays fell behind 17-6 just seven minutes into the game, but the Bluejays used a 31-13 run to take a 37-30 lead with 4:20 left to play in the half. Redlands (1-2) answered back by closing the half on 12-4 run to take a 43-42 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The two teams traded buckets early in the second half, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Chris Childs and D'Ante Foster gave Elmhurst a 61-56 lead with 14 minutes left on the clock. The Bluejays built a 72-62 lead with under 10 minutes left, but Redlands used a 13-2 run to slice Elmhurst's lead down to just one point with 5:45 remaining.

The Bluejays opened up an eight-point advantage with 2:43 to play, but Redlands closed to within a bucket after Andrew Maertens knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:09 left. Bainter hit a pair of free throws and Schroeder followed with a steal and a lay-up to give Elmhurst a 90-84 lead. The Bluejays made their final four free throws to seal the victory.

After shooting only 35.3 percent (12-of-34) in the first half, the Bluejays shot 65.4 percent (17-of-26) in the second half to finish the game hitting 48.3 percent from the field. Elmhurst hit 40.0 percent (6-of-15) of its 3-point attempts and the Bluejays shot 83.3 percent (30-of-36) from the charity stripe.

Redlands finished the game shooting 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the floor, including 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from beyond the arc. 

Elmhurst converted 17 Redlands' turnovers into 27 points. The Bluejays won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Redlands 35-31.

Bainter poured in a career-high 26 points to lead the Bluejays in the win. He hit 10-of-14 from the foul line and pulled down eight rebounds in the win. Schroeder added a career-high 16 points after shooting 4-of-7 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Zack Boyd added a double-double, totaling 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Childs scored eight points while Joe Acosta added seven. Mike McCurdy came off the bench to score seven points and dish out a game-high five assists.

Redlands was led by Pat Coffey's 17 points. Justin Sobczyk added 13 while Andrew Mills scored 12 for the Bulldogs. 

The Bluejays travel to Kalamazoo College on Saturday, December 5.
