Box Score

ELMHURST, Ill. -
The Elmhurst College men's soccer team captured its first-ever CCIW Championship by playing Wheaton College to a 1-1 double overtime draw at a rain-soaked Berens Park.

A standing-room-only crowd saw Elmhurst improve to 11-3-3 overall and 5-0-2 in league play with the tie. Wheaton moved to 12-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in CCIW competition. With the tie, the Bluejays have secured the top-seed and home field advantage throughout the upcoming CCIW Tournament.

Wheaton jumped on the scoreboard just 13:39 into the contest when Matt Swartz netted his ninth goal of the season. Swartz collected a ball that deflected off an Elmhurst defender and fired the ball into the lower right corner of the net past a diving Sebastian Domczewski.

Elmhurst turned on the offense in the second half as the Bluejays outshot the Thunder 14-7 in the half. A mistake by the Thunder allowed the Bluejays to knot the score in the 50th minute. Keith Thurman chipped the ball into the box and a Wheaton defender headed the ball backwards and into the net for an own goal.

Both teams had scoring chances in the second half and in overtime. Wheaton defenders recorded three team saves to turn away open net scoring opportunities for the Bluejays. Wheaton had a chance to win the game in the first overtime but a shot kissed off the goal post and back into the box where Domczewski smothered the rebound.

Domczewski finished with six saves in goal for the Bluejays while Ryan Sager collected three saves for Wheaton.

Elmhurst closes out the regular season portion of its schedule by hosting St. Norbert College on Tuesday, October 27, at 6:00 p.m.
