Bluejay Women Fall at Albion in Overtime

ALBION, Mich. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team dropped to 1-2 on the season following a heartbreaking 62-58 overtime loss at Albion College.

Elmhurst appeared to have the game in hand, opening up a 47-38 lead with just under eight minutes to play. But the Bluejays' offense went cold as Elmhurst scored just three points in the final eight minutes. Despite the cold offense, the Bluejays still led 50-46 with 30 seconds to play. A pair of free throws by Albion cut the lead down to two points with 15 seconds left. An offensive foul on Elmhurst gave Albion the ball with 11 seconds to play. Melissa Shaw evened the score on a jumper to send the game to overtime.

In the extra period, the Bluejays built a 58-55 lead with two minutes to play, but a Lindsey Davis 3-pointer evened the score with 1:49 to go. After an Elmhurst turnover, Albion took the lead on a pair of Nicole Dennis free throws with 38 seconds. Elmhurst turned the ball over two additional times in the closing seconds as Albion sealed the win from the foul line.

The Bluejays finished the game shooting 38.0 percent (19-of-50) from the floor and only 12.5 percent (1-of-8) from downtown. Elmhurst also struggled from the foul line, hitting only 65.5 percent (19-of-29) of its shots.

Albion shot 40.8 percent (20-of-49) from the floor and 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from 3-point range. The Brittons also struggled from the foul line, hitting only 16-of-26 (61.5 percent) of its attempts.

Both teams struggled at holding on to the ball. Albion turned the ball over 31 times, resulting in 25 points for the Bluejays. However, Elmhurst turned the ball over 30 times, giving the Brittons 25 points. It marked the second time in three games that the Bluejays have committed 30 turnovers.

Brittany Bobruk led Elmhurst with 19 points. She added a game-high five assists, and a game-high four steals in the loss. Lyndsie Long added 14 points and five rebounds. Kelsey Monroe added nine points while Maggie McTeague pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

Albion was led by Brittany Kemperman's 26 points. Kemperman shot 9-of-16 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from downtown. Dennis added 11 points in the win.

Elmhurst travels to Aurora University on Friday, November 28.
