Softball splits CCIW opener at North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Elmhurst opened conference play on Wednesday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader on the road at North Central.

Game 1
North Central 5, Elmhurst 2
WP: Maude • LP: Denny (2-3)

The host Cardinals would score the first runs of the day in the bottom of the 3rd, taking a 3-0 lead before adding additional runs in the 4th and 6th frames. The Bluejays would put runners on base in three of the first four innings, and would load the bases in the top of the 4th with three straight two-out singles from Bailey Proffitt, Josie Waite, and Bella Swift.

The Jays were held off the scoreboard until the 7th, when Hailee Jenkins started a rally with a two-out double, later scoring on a wild pitch. Brenna Morley's two-out single scored another run after Sidney Carlson reached on a single and came home for the second run of the inning.

Proffitt would finish the first game of the day by going 3-for-3 at the plate, with Morley and Waite both collecting two hits in the game.

Game 2
Elmhurst 2, North Central 1
WP: Lenczewski (2-5) • LP: Maude

The Jays would strike first in game two, beginning with Danielle Hood's leadoff single to start the top of the 2nd. Three straight batters would then reach on fielders' choices, with Proffitt scoring the first run of the day off Clara Rice's ground ball to second.

The Cardinals would respond in the bottom of the 5th, scoring one run on two hits and an error to tie the game at 1-1. In the top of the 7th, Elmhurst reclaimed the lead, with Morley collecting a 7th-inning RBI for the second game of the day, driving home Jenkins who reached on a bunt single earlier in the frame.

Morley finished 2-for-3 in the game, and led the Jays on the day, going a combined 4-for-7 with a walk and two RBI. Emma Lenczewski picked up the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with just one run allowed.

The Bluejays look to start another win streak on Friday afternoon, when they travel to Carroll for a CCIW doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
