ELMHURST, Ill. – The Bluejays jumped out to an early first-quarter lead on Thursday night, but a scoreless second quarter and a slow start to the second half would lead to Elmhurst dropping their non-conference matchup to Colorado College, 18-10 at Langhorst Field.
The Jays would open with a 4-0 lead before the mid-point of the opening period, with goals from four different players. Eli Spence would score his second of the night at the 5:57 mark of the first period to give Elmhurst a 5-1 advantage that they would take throughout the rest of the first.
Colorado College would begin a run of 11 unanswered goals in the second, shutting out the Bluejays while scoring three to make it a 5-4 Elmhurst lead at the half. The Tigers then scored eight straight in the third period to go up 12-5, before Hunter Hernandez's goal closed out the third to get the Jays back on the board.
Elmhurst would bounce back offensively in the fourth, with four goals scored including two more for Hernandez who completed the hat trick, but Colorado College would answer each Bluejay rally, scoring six goals to secure the win.
Hernandez led the Bluejays with three goals on the night, followed by Spence who scored twice with two assists.
The Bluejays will look to bounce back when they resume CCIW play on Saturday, with a trip to North Central. The evening matchup with the Cardinals is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
