ELMHURST, Ill. – Setting a career high in scoring for the second game in a row, Aidyn Boone led the Bluejays in their postseason debut Tuesday night, as Elmhurst eliminated Carroll 95-85 inside R.A. Faganel Hall for the quarterfinal round of the CCIW Men's Basketball Championship.
Boone would post a team-high 27 points in the win, surpassing his previous career best of 21 points from Saturday. Dominic Trelenberg and Luke Smith each tallied 16 points apiece, while E.J. Marshall collected 10 points off the bench.
The visitors would control the early game, scoring six straight to take a 12-7 lead by the 14:46 mark of the first half. Carroll would go up by as much as ten, 22-12, following a 7-0 run with 12 minutes on the clock. The Bluejays would respond before the break, when Luke Smith banged back-to-back threes to tie the game with 5:12 left, 36-36.
The Jays would take the lead just before the break, closing the period on an 8-2 run capped with Boone's three-pointer in the closing seconds that gave Elmhurst the 45-44 advantage.
A pair of threes from Boone early in the second half would allow the Bluejays to keep the lead throughout the midpoint of the half. A scoring drought that would see Elmhurst with just one field goal over a seven minute stretch would allow the Pioneers to move back in front, and with 5:37 remaining the Jays would trail 70-68.
Boone would respond for the Jays, hitting a layup with the foul and giving Elmhurst the lead on the free throw. Inside of three minutes to play, Smith and Trelenberg would put the game away with back-to-back three-pointers, putting the Jays up by ten and holding the lead the rest of the way.
With the win Elmhust advances to the semifinals of the CCIW Tournament, where they will face 2nd-seeded Carthage. The neutral-site matchup hosted at Illinois Wesleyan is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27.
