ELMHURST, Ill. – After suffering a one-point loss to the Thunder two months ago, the Bluejays were finally able to return the favor on Wednesday night, as Elmhurst Men's Basketball held on for an 80-79 victory over Wheaton inside R.A. Faganel Hall.
The Jays' top scorer Dominic Trelenberg led the way again, finishing with a team-high 23 points and nine rebounds, while Luke Smith should shoot 6-for-12 from the floor to post 14 points in the win. E.J. Marshall came off the bench for 12 points, one shy of his career high.
The visitors would lead throughout the early moments of the game, going up by as much as 12 points by the 13:18 mark of the first half, 22-10. The Bluejays responded with three straight buckets from Trelenberg, including a pair of threes, to get back in the game. Marshall's three-pointer just under the ten-minute mark would even the score again, at 26-26.
A 13-2 run would give the Jays the lead, finishing with a pair of Sebastian Blachut free throws that put Elmhurst up 32-28 at the 7:57 mark. The Jays would take a four-point lead into the halftime break, thanks to a 6-0 run to close out the first half.
Elmhurst would lead the second half wire-to-wire, but had to maintain a narrow lead throughout most of the period. A pair of free throws from Vinnie Adjahoungbeta would give Elmhurst their largest lead of the night, and their only double-digit advantage of the game, 77-67 with 6:21 to play. Wheaton would respond with eight straight points to, as Elmhurst finished the game with just one field goal over the final 6:30.
With the lead trimmed to one, Elmhurst was able to hold off a last-second attempt from the Thunder to secure the win.
The Bluejays can formally secure their place in the CCIW Men's Basketball Tournament on Saturday, when they face North Central in the final road trip of the regular season. Tipoff from Naperville on Valentine's Day is set for 7:00 p.m.
