FENTON, Mo. - The Elmhurst University men's soccer team secured a 1-0 road victory at Webster on Sunday afternoon at the Worldwide Technology Soccer Park. With the win, the Bluejays improved to 3-2-0 on the season.
Elmhurst struck early in the first half when Jacob Wipke found the back of the net in the 19th minute. Wipke collected a feed from Dario Gutierrez and converted the chance to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead. The goal, Wipke's second of the season, held as the difference-maker the rest of the afternoon.
Elmhurst's defense and goalkeeper tandem preserved the shutout despite Webster's pressure. Starting keeper Niyen Ruffin recorded one save in the opening 45 minutes before giving way to Jakub Wiktorczyk, who added two stops in the second half. The two combined to turn away all three Webster shots on goal.
The Bluejays produced eight total shots, with four on target. Alongside Wipke's goal, Gutierrez led Elmhurst with two attempts, including one on frame, while Charlie Terriquez and Klaus Gartner each added efforts in the second half. The Jays also earned four corner kicks—two in each half.
The match was physical throughout, with Elmhurst committing 11 fouls and picking up one yellow card. Wipke was booked in the 54th minute. Webster totaled 10 fouls and was shown two yellow cards late in the contest.
Webster matched Elmhurst with eight shots but was unable to break through. The Gorloks generated six first-half corner kicks but were kept at bay by the Bluejay defense.
