Bluejays Fall to Blue Boys

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst University men's soccer team came up just short on the road Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 at Illinois College in Jacksonville. The Bluejays moved to 3-5-1 overall with the result.

Elmhurst generated early chances in the first half, with Caden Sultzbaugh and Isaac Puchalla forcing back-to-back saves from Illinois College goalkeeper TJ Esseily in the 13th and 14th minutes. The Bluejays also earned a pair of corners but couldn't break through, and the teams went into halftime scoreless.

The deciding moment came in the 73rd minute when Illinois College's Joey Hernandez scored off an assist from Adan Leon to put the hosts in front 1-0. Elmhurst pressed for an equalizer, with second-half shots from Charlie Terriquez, Michail Tzankov, and Andrew Walters, but Esseily and the Illinois College defense held firm to preserve the shutout.

Goalkeeper Jakub Wiktorczyk kept Elmhurst in the match with four second-half saves, finishing with four stops on 11 total shots faced. The Bluejays totaled six shots, four of which were on target, while Illinois College finished with 11 shots and five on frame.

Elmhurst was shown four yellow cards in the match, while Illinois College picked up two. The Bluejays also held a 5-6 deficit in corner kicks.
