APPLETON, Wis. - The Elmhurst University women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw at Lawrence University on Friday evening at The Banta Bowl. Both goals came in the second half, with each side converting from the penalty spot in a tightly contested matchup.
Elmhurst (4-1-1) controlled much of the possession and outshot the Vikings 16-5, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. The Bluejays generated early pressure, with attempts from Lauren Nevins, Katelyn Guolla, and Maddie Cummings narrowly missing the frame. Kelli Coughlin nearly put Elmhurst in front midway through the half, but her strike from the center of the box was stopped by Lawrence goalkeeper Ally Littau, one of her six saves on the night.
Lawrence (2-2-2) managed just one shot in the opening 45 minutes, and Elmhurst's defense held firm heading into halftime in a scoreless deadlock. The breakthrough came in the 75th minute when Coughlin was awarded a penalty kick and calmly buried it into the back of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Lawrence answered just four minutes later. The Vikings earned a penalty of their own, and Kate Noonan converted to even the score at 1-1 in the 79th minute. Elmhurst pressed for a late winner with shots from Nevins, Guolla, and another effort from Coughlin, but Littau came up with key stops to preserve the draw.
Coughlin led the Bluejays with three shots on goal and seven players recorded attempts. Nevins, Guolla, and Cummings each finished with three shots apiece. Goalkeeper Erin Fitzharris made one save while facing five total shots.
The Bluejays finished with nine fouls and picked up one yellow card, while Lawrence was whistled nine times and received two cautions. Elmhurst also held a 1-0 advantage in corner kicks.
