CAROL STREAM, Ill. - In a high-scoring contest, the Elmhurst University baseball team fell to Concordia Chicago, 11-6, Wednesday afternoon at Lee Pfund Stadium.
Concordia capitalized on timely hitting and aggressive baserunning, amassing 11 runs on 12 hits while Elmhurst struggled to keep pace despite scoring six runs on 10 hits.Â
Leading the charge for Elmhurst was Adan Nieves, who recorded a hit and a run scored, including a double. Brett Vercruysse contributed with a hit, a walk, and a stolen base. Rock Smith also tallied two hits and an RBI. Jaden Mitchell had a multi-hit game with two hits and one RBI.Â
The game began with three scoreless innings as both starting pitchers settled in early. In the top of the fourth, Concordia broke through with a five-run inning, capitalizing on timely hits and defensive lapses from Elmhurst. Elmhurst answered back with a run in the bottom half, but the damage had been done.
In the sixth inning, Elmhurst rallied with four runs of their own to close the gap, sparked by a series of singles and a crucial error from Concordia. However, Concordia responded immediately in the seventh and ninth innings, scoring one and four runs, respectively, to put the game out of reach. Elmhurst managed a final run in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little, too late.
