Bluejays Drop Battle with Vikings

RECAP

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst University men's basketball team fell to Augustana, 60-58, Thursday evening on the road.

Despite a strong second-half push, the Bluejays couldn't overcome an early deficit, dropping to 10-13 overall and 6-8 in CCIW play.

Sebastian Blachut and Dominic Trelenberg led the way for Elmhurst, each scoring 11 points. Blachut added three rebounds and three assists while Trelenberg was efficient, shooting 4-for-5 from the field. Jaiden Malichi contributed with a strong defensive effort, recording a team-high three blocks. Elmhurst's bench played a key role, adding 19 points to the effort.

Elmhurst shot 38.9% (21-for-54) from the field and hit six three-pointers on 21 attempts (28.6%). They converted 10 of 16 free throws (62.5%) and grabbed 38 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass. Augustana finished with a slightly better shooting percentage at 40.7% (22-for-54), though they struggled from deep (4-for-18, 22.2%). The Vikings capitalized on free throws, making 12 of 16 (75%) and out-rebounded Elmhurst 41-38. Both teams struggled with turnovers, with Elmhurst committing 12 compared to Augustana's 11.

The first half was a defensive battle, with neither team finding an offensive rhythm early. Augustana jumped out to a small lead, taking advantage of Elmhurst's turnovers and missed opportunities in the paint. A three-pointer from Trelenberg brought the Bluejays within striking distance, but Augustana responded with a strong run before halftime. Tyler Knuth's jumper with 41 seconds left extended the Vikings' lead to 33-22 at the break.

Elmhurst came out firing in the second half, quickly chipping away at the deficit. A layup from Jaiden Malichi and a fast-break score by Blachut cut the lead to single digits. The Bluejays continued to push, with Trelenberg sinking a clutch three-pointer to put Elmhurst ahead 58-55 with under two minutes remaining. However, Augustana responded with key free throws from Evan Ambrose in the final moments to regain the lead. A last-second attempt by Elmhurst to tie the game fell short, sealing the narrow loss.
