ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst University women's soccer team earned a 4-2 victory over Benedictine University Sunday afternoon at Langhorst Field.
The Bluejays (1-0-1) settled in from an early deficit to score three goals in the first half, and were able to add on to their lead and hang on for their first victory of the season.
Benedictine (0-2) was unable to generate much offense in the match thanks to a strong EU defense and matching two-save efforts from goalkeepers
Nova Rothlisberger and
Megan Kleve.Â
The Eagles started fast, scoring in the third minute of the match to take a 1-0 lead, but
Lauren Nevins found a feed from
Camila Rubio and buried the ball into the back of the net to knot the score at one. Ten minutes later,
Natalie Workman served a ball to
Ellie Muscarello, who again found the back of the net to double the Bluejay lead.
After a hard foul in the box drawn by
Katelyn Guolla gave the Jays a penalty kick, sophomore
Kelli Coughlin took the penalty and easily deked the keeper for another goal, moving the score to 3-1 in favor of ElmU. Guolla's first-half effort later paid off, as the freshman scored her first collegiate goal in the 62nd minute to put Elmhurst up, 4-1. Despite conceding an own-goal in the 84th minute, Elmhurst was able to maintain pressure and keep the Eagles off the board, leading to their 4-2 home win.
