KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst University softball team dropped their CCIW-opening twinbill with Carthage College Saturday afternoon.
Elmhurst (9-11, 0-2 CCIW) dropped game one, 1-6, after letting up four runs late and not being able to respond to the Firebirds' offensive barrage. Elmhurst only tallied four hits in game one, with
Chiara O'Leary,
Bailey Proffitt,
Ilyssa Calderon, and
Hailee Jenkins each tallying a hit. In the circle, O'Leary pitched all six innings and took the loss for the Bluejays.
Game two appeared to be going Elmhurst's way, with the Jays powering five runs across the plate in the fourth inning to open a 6-2 lead. However, Carthage knotted the game at six with four runs in the fifth and breifly took a one-run lead in the seventh, but a clutch RBI from Maddie Kreich sent the game to extra innings. In the ninth, Carthage was able to plate a run on a single, and Elmhurst could not respond to drop game two, 7-8, in nine innings.
The Jays were powered by the long ball in game two, with
Gianna Amundsen sending a three-run shot over the wall in a 2-for-4 performance, while Alex Kiriakopoulous tallied three RBI on a double and a two-run home run in the fourth. In the circle,
Ali Mockenhaupt kept the Bluejays in the game with two innings pitched giving up just one hit while adding a pair of strikeouts, but O'Leary gave up the game-winning run to take her second loss of the day.
