Softball Downed by Titans in Saturday-Afternoon Twinbill

RECAP

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against T25th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at Salt Creek Park.

Elmhurst (9-14, 0-5 CCIW) stayed with the nationally-ranked Titans in game one, but ultimately fell short after a ninth-inning rally from Illinois Wesleyan, falling 1-4. In game two, the Titans (16-7, 3-1 CCIW) handled the Bluejays with a trio of multi-run innings to take the 6-14, five-inning run-rule win and the season series.

In game one, the score stood tied at zero after seven complete innings after the Bluejays worked through a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh to keep the Titans off the board. The visitors plated a run in the top of the eighth, but Elmhurst responded with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Emma Lenczewski to force another inning. In the ninth, IWU scattered three runs across the plate and the Jays had no answer, falling in their second-straight extra inning contest.

Lenczewski provided the only RBI of game one for the Bluejays, while Gianna Amundsen had a pair of base hits in the game. In the circle, Chiara O'Leary provided six innings of scoreless softball, while Ali Mockenhaupt worked the home team out of a jam in the seventh but ultimately took the loss to drop to 1-3 on the season.

The visitors jumped out to a 5-0 lead through two innings, but Elmhurst responded with a four-run rally of their own in the third to bring the game within one. however, nine runs given up in the following two innings proved to be too big of a hole for the Bluejays to work out of, falling via run rule 6-14. Amundsen provided three RBI in the game, while O'Leary and Paige Jahaske provided the other runs for Elmhurst.

UP NEXT

Elmhurst will dip back into non-conference action tomorrow afternoon, April 14, taking on the 15th-ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks on the road for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
