CLERMONT, Fla. -Â The Elmhurst University softball team swept a pair of games against Amherst and Colby College Saturday afternoon on the penultimate day of the team's Florida trip.
Elmhurst (6-6) started the day with a 10-2 run-rule victory over Amherst College in five innings, and followed with a close 9-7 win over Colby College in the afternoon slot.
GAME ONE | ELMHURST 10, AMHERST 2 (5 INN.)
Elmhurst went down to begin the game after giving up two first-inning runs, but the Bluejays responded with ten unanswered runs of their own to take the run-rule victory.
Clara Rice led the way at the plate with four RBI's, while
Gianna Amundsen and
Chiara O'Leary each tallied two RBI. In the circle, O'Leary earned the win giving up just three hits and two runs across five innings pitched.
Amherst would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Elmhurst would respond quickly with an RBI single from O'Leary, a three-RBI double from Rice, and a
Paige Jahaske RBI double to put Elmhurst up 5-2 through one inning.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of
Hailee Jenkins would add another run in the second, and Amundsen would knock another pair in on a double to increase the lead to 8-2 through three. Rice added a sacrifice fly in the fourth for her fourth RBI of the contest, and O'Leary would knock an RBI single up the middle to walk it off for the Bluejays to secure the run-rule victory.
GAME TWO | ELMHURST 9, COLBY 7
Elmhurst's offense continued to stay hot in game two, jumping out to an 8-3 lead through two and a half innings, but Colby would not go away, nearly coming back but falling short in the seventh to secure Elmhurst's victory.
It was another monster game at the plate for Rice, as the freshman knocked in another four RBI to lead the Jays, while
Ali Mockenhaupt and O'Leary tallied two RBI each for Elmhurst. In the circle,
Emma Lenczewski earned pitched six strong innings to earn the win, while also tallying five strikeouts, while Mockenhaupt earned the save and secured the Bluejay victory.
Rice got the scoring started with a three-run triple in the first, but Colby would respond with a trio of runs of their own to knot the game at three after one inning. Elmhurst again scored three in the second with an error and a pair of bases-loaded walks from Mockenhaupt and Rice to put Elmhurst up, 6-3, through two innings.
Another pair of runs in the third from O'Leary and Mockenhaupt put Elmhurst up 8-3, but Colby would respond with two runs in their half of the third to keep the game close, 8-5. Despite the momentum for Colby, the bats were silenced in the seventh and Elmhurst picked up the 9-7 victory.

Elmhurst will wrap up their spring break trip tomorrrow afternoon, March 24, against Tufts and MIT at 9:00 a.m. CT and 1:30 p.m. CT, respectively.
